Violent crack-down of peaceful protest in South Korea
In South Korea, more than 200000 people have been participating in the peaceful protest against the government's decision to import! beef from the US for the last 5 weeks. South Koreans are firmly opposed to the import!ation of American beef under the trade agreement between South Korea and the US which does not confer the Korean government the right to undertake thorough inspection of the import!s for mad cows disease. South Korean people have united to urge the Korean government to rectify unfair trade terms and protect its own people from the uncurable mad cows disease. South Koreans from different regions of the country have gathered together to march against the Korean government which is blinded by short-term gains of the trade agreement at the expense of people's health and safety. People's will and right to live have been materialised in the form of a series of non-violent candlelight vigil protests. On 31May 2008, the Korean government has ordered the police crack-down of the peaceful protest involving the excessive use of force including water bombs, metal pipes and tear gas by the police special forces unit. This renders many ...
Regional Integration in Latin America (Interview)
Center for Global Development visiting fellow Nancy Lee suggests a fresh approach to regional integration in the form of a proposed regional investment agreement. The idea is a collective effort to set common standards for reducing specific barriers to domestic and foreign investment, similar to standards set in trade agreements for lowering trade barriers.
Obama Looks to Exports, Hoping to Create Jobs
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The International Monetary Fund has raised its prediction for world economic growth to four and six-tenths percent this year. That is a half-percentage point higher than the estimate in April. The IMF credited expansion in Asia and growing demand in the United States. But the lender's chief economist also warned that "downside risks have risen sharply." President Obama talked about the importance of building exports as a way to create jobs and economic growth at home. He said: "American exports grew almost seventeen percent over the first four months of this year, compared to the same period last year. Part of this, of course, is due to the global recovery. But we are also moving forward on improving conditions for America's exporters." Mr. Obama re-launched the President's Export Council. The group includes business and labor leaders who will advise on trade issues. The government reported that private employers added only eighty-three thousand jobs in June. Unemployment remains high even after six months of job growth. As the president pointed ...

Wheat, Weed, and ObamaCare: How the Commerce Clause Made Congress All-Powerful
The Commerce Clause of the US Constitution grants Congress the power to "regulate commerce . . . among the several States," and for more than 100 years federal lawmakers invoked it for a very narrow purpose—to prevent states from imposing trade barriers on each other. But today members of Congress act as if it gives them the authority to do just about anything—including forcing you to eat your vegetables. During her Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Elena Kagan seemed to accept that the Commerce Clause could, in theory, give Congress the power to dictate what Americans eat. And what about ObamaCare's "individual mandate," which forces Americans to purchase health insurance? ObamaCare opponents are lining up to challenge its constitutionality, but supporters say it's justified—you guessed it—under the Commerce Clause. How did a clause intended as a restriction on states wind up giving Congress a green light to regulate noncommercial, local, and purely private behavior? How will ObamaCare stand up against the legal challenges brought by the states? Legal titans John Eastman (Chapman University Law Professor) and Erwin Chemerinsky (Founding Dean, University of ...
