Will The Stocks Bear Market Continue To Reign?
There were genuine signs of emerging optimism in stock markets last week. Confidence has been largely absent so far in 2009, with every attempted rally squashed before it really had chance to get going. There is a growing sense that this time round things are different, and this belief will only grow further, if markets can survive the next week or so without dropping too far below last Thursdayâs low. The next few weeks could be a real test. If markets are able to maintain these levels without giving up too much ground, then more buyers might come out of hiding and the recovery could gain momentum.Last week, General Electric had its credit rating cut, but this has been largely telegraphed over the last few months, and the cut appears to be less than initially feared. This coupled with signs of stability in US retail sales pushed markets higher. The euro enjoyed a strong week against the dollar and pound, pushing sterling to its lowest levels since 2008. UK gilts endured a volatile week as ...
Bear Market Basics
Stock market investors usually talk about two types of markets: bull markets and bear markets. Simply put, during bull markets, stock prices are on the rise and investors are optimistic that they will continue that way. During bear markets, stock prices have fallen for a period of time, and investors expect the trend of decreasing prices to continue. The danger for an investor really lies more in responding in the wrong way than in the falling prices themselves. Over time, the stock market rises and falls on ...

Another Bear Market Rally or a Time to Buy Stocks?
The stock market is looking a little stronger and investors are dipping back into equities following a three month decline. In the US, the Dow Jones is closing above the 10,000 level once again and the in the UK, the FTSE 100 is firmly back above the 5,000 mark. These big-figure-levels look lo be offering price support and are helping to attract buyers. The real test starts now for the markets. The question is whether they can sustain these gains? At the moment there is a concern for the bulls. Looking at the spread trading charts, the lower-lows and lower-highs of the FTSE 100 indicate that the overall down trend is set to continue. Note though that there is certainly some pressure to the upside for the FTSE 100 as the recent gains have taken us back above the 20-day and 50-day moving averages where resistance can normally be expected. The theme for now is the European banking stress tests. For all of the criticism that they are getting the ...
