An index is a statistical measurement representing the present value of a group of stocks. It can be used as a sort of barometer to get an idea of how the market is going as a whole. The oldest known of these "barometers" is the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is simply called "The Dow". It was created in 1896 by Charles Dow and was merely taking the average of 12 stocks. Today, the Dow is calculated by averaging 30 stocks; therefore, the value of the Dow is not really an index but an average. However, for the purposes of this article, it will be referred to as an average. Indexes are calculated differently than an average. The main difference between them is the weighting. Weighting is the relative importance of the items when the index is calculated.
